"Biggest Brother", a biography on Richard Winters, Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st AB, by Larry Alexander. Pretty good read so far. Not much new apart from his pre-Army life and his love of icecream.

"Slaget om Nordkalotten" by Lars Gyllenhaal. A history of the fighting above the Arctic Circle in Finland, Russia and Norway 1941-45. Little-known facts like W-SS warehouses in Sweden, and for good measure (neutrality is a kind of pragmatism...) secret OSS bases just a stone's throw from the Norwegian border. Intersting read.

I've just begun reading "Storm of Steel" by Ernst Jnger, which is his WW1 memoirs. I'm still reading the introduction by the translator, and am very keen on the main event, as his book is said to be the best memoirs that came out of the war. Having read Graves, Sassoon, Manning and Remarque, it will be intersting to see how he measures up!

Just finished "In My Brother's Shadow: A Life And Death In The SS" by Uwe Timm. The brother of the title was in the Pionier Batallion of the "Totenkopf" Division.

Finished "Storm of Steel". Very good book, giving a view of the Western Front by a survivor who was nearly four years in the frontline, wounded 14 times (!) and advancing from private to lieutenant in a couple of years. Jnger describes battle in an almost detached way, before exploding in action during the great offensive of March, 1918. His last battle is almost extracorporeal, where a bullet in the lungs ends the war from him. Unlike his British counterparts (Graves and Sassoon), there's nothing on his pre- and post war life, and while Remarque's "All Quiet" is more passionate, there's no denying that Jnger spent some ten times more time on the front. People are killed all around him (I think that he names at least 20 lieutenants that were killed), and despite him being wounded on several occasions, he got more lives than nine cats. All in all a stunning account by someone who not just survived the war, but who lived to the ripe old age of 102 (he was the last surviving wearer of the "Blue Max"). Just make sure to get the new translation, which is way superior to the original English translation made in the 1920's.
Moving on the "Svenskar i krig" ("Swedes at War"), about Swedes involved in the wars fought 1914-45. An English translation will be published later this year. "I hate wars. They destroy the armies."

Just picked up a book called Rommel, as Military Commander by Ronald Lewin. It charts the course of Rommels military career, so it should be real good. We shall see.
Kyle Finally got up for my first mission. We dropped 5-1000's on Muhldorf. There was no flak. Happy me!

Just finished "The Master Plan: Himmler's Scholars And The Holocaust" by Heather Pringle. It's a history of the Ahnenerbe and the SS racial research. Pretty interesting stuff and it doesn't get bogged down in a bunch of tedious details. Some of the things these guys believed is just incredible.
