I found a pic of a "Candidate" not wearing the badge or shoulder insignia but no mention of when it was issued/awarded. The arm patch was introduced in an order dated May 2nd, 1939, and was later modified to incorporate a field grey backing in early 1940, once the transition from M36 to M40 uniforms began. Also, it states he's an NCO candidate, so he should already by a qualified GJ. I wouldn't fret too much about this one photo and what it means. Maybe his hat badge got torn off while climbing. Who really knows without a knowledgable person to provide feedback for a specific photo? If you look at enough photos from WWII, you'll see plenty of missing, mismatched or incorrectly worn insignia. IIRC, in the same book, there is a photo of a GJ with a cap that has a buckle in the front, not the issue buttons! P.S. Great information to have, Rogue. Thanks!

I'll double-check my reference books when I get home in the next day or two. From what I recall, any member of a Gebirgs unit was authorized to wear the badge, so I'm sure it was issued by the local quartermaster upon assignment to a mountain unit. They could also be purchased privately if the soldier wanted a fancier version than the standard badge (which was especially popular with officers). It was a symbol of the particular unit type, like the panzer skull collar tabs, not necessarily of any particular accomplishment in training. See the Heeresbergfuhrer badge for that type of award. Many former Gebirgsjagers continued to wear their Edelweiss badges even after transferring to non-mountain units. Last Edited By: RogueJK 06/23/09 20:14:45. Edited 6 times.

So I continue to assume that these type of branch-specific badges were issued by the quartermaster, along with other branch-specific insignia (shoulderboards, collar litzen, etc) and the rest of their kit, at some point after arriving at the Ersatz und Ausbildungs Abteilung (Replacement and Training Detachment) for whatever division they are assigned to. As skullheadman already stated, there are too many exceptions to the rule when it comes to wartime photographs. I wouldn't let one picture puzzle you too much. The fact that he isn't wearing a cap badge may have numerous explanations.
