Early war French gaiters |
Lead | |
|
Does anyone have any good reference photos of August 1914 French gaiters that would have been worn with the red trousers? All my pictures are very small and
don't help with customising too well. I've been using the Sideshow French Legionnaire boots but they have a different type of gaiter and I'd like
to try and make them more accurate...
Thanks, Michael |

Nooker21:
According to "Army Uniforms of World War 1: European and United States Armies and Aviation Services" by Andrew Mollo and Illustrated by Pierre Turner (Arco Publishing Company, New York, 1978), the French other ranks wore black leather short gaiters which seemed to be laced in front with 5 hooks and two eyelets (the eyelets were spaced above and below two hooks located on the inner side of the gaiter; the outer side of the gaiter had three hooks top to bottom without eyelets). The reference book refers to Plate 45, and is described in some detail on page 114 and page 187. I like this reference book because "all of the illustrations are based on photographs which ensure both the accuracy of the uniform and the character of the period, which is often missing from modern drawings of period uniforms. The colours of the uniforms are carefully checked against surviving examples in private collections and national museums." (from the Preface). Unfortunately, this splendid reference work is out of print, yet is nonetheless available from specialist book dealers for a pretty penny. Hope this helps you!

Thanks, Shutze, but that's the best photographic reference I already own, and everything else is just illustrations or descriptions. I should have taken
some shots when I was in the Imperial War Museum a few years back. Oh well, maybe if I get to France in the fall, I'll have better luck...

Good news, we're already making them and the French boots in leather are already available ... just
need to update our website this weekend. Auggie www.battlegeartoys.com |

Wow! That was unexpected! So these are the five hooked short gaiters? Good thing I bought those red trousers from you at Weekend of Heroes then. You're
totally helping me outfit my French army. Now, if only I could get those flaming grenade buttons made, I'd be set. Oh, I guess I'd need a proper
brass square belt buckle as well
