Question: Russian/Red army memoirs? |

I was wondering if anyone knew of good memoirs/war stories written from the Soviet viewpoint regarding their experiences during WWII. We have lots of great
stories to humanize the Americans, British, and Germans, but I am not familiar with any accounts written by an average Soviet foot soldier in WWII. I think we
tend to see them as faceless masses of cannon fodder, and I would like to read about how they felt about the war they were forced into. Are there any
good ones? Translation into English is a must

I enjoyed "A Writer At War" by Vassily Grossman when I read it several years ago. It's the Eastern Front told in small spurts from the viewpoint
of an embedded Red Army newspaper reporter.

I'll check that out, but the problem I think with getting Russian memoirs will be censorship. The good part about German memoirs is there was no Nazi
government afterward to censor and whitewash their writings - so the vets could write pretty much whatever they wanted.
Even though people say the victors write the history books, this is a case where the victorious Russian soldiers maybe couldn't tell their stories because the government would never let them get out; meanwhile if they lost they could have said whatever they wanted.

Luckily, there are people like Mr. Grossman who kept personal journals and memoirs. These can then be published by an agency outside the Soviet Union, or after
the fall of Communism, without fear of government censorship.
I'm sure there are plenty of other Red Army personal memoirs out there. Check out this list at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Army-Memoirs/lm/R3PVDI6XBZND8F The Stackpole Military History series also seems to have several, including "Penalty Strike", "T-34 in Action", and "Red Road from Stalingrad". The Stackpole German memoirs are hit or miss, but still interesting.

Interesting. I'll definitel check those out. I misunderstood and thought you were saying that the Grossman book was made up of articles he wrote while
embedded, which would have most certainly been censored heavily.
