Bruce, are you doing those individually out of foam or casting them in something? They look terrific.

Funny, none of them say "Carentan"Ouch...I'm not sure where that came from..... LOL...here are some pics of the inspiration for these bases...
Here is a link to the original thread I posted about the history of these bases with a number of pics of the process... http://onesixthnet.yuku.com/topic/14127 http://www.sixtharmygroup.com/portal/viewtopic.php?t=19201 http://www.sixtharmygroup.com/portal/viewtopic.php?t=19337&highlight=band+brothers I'm not sure where I could have put the words 'Carentan' on the base... and as they are all copies of each other, it would be 'all or nothing' as far as any of them having something the others' wouldn't... I DO want to create a small scene with a 'Carentan' road sign....(perhaps representing a sign that might have appeared on the causeway leading south into town... but that would represent a scene on the edge of town or on the outskirts, and not really 'in town'... What's the sign supposed to say? "Carentan - here! Zero miles"? Or maybe it would be a tourist kiosk with a "Welcome to Carentan" sign
In all seriousness though, I live in Columbus and I can hardly think of any signs here that say "Columbus," other than city government buildings, libraries, or tourist sites of interest. Lots say the names of nearby cities though.
I broke down and bought a dremel.

Excellent bases.
Not sure how it was 65 yrs ago, nowadays, at least in Normandy, the only time I can recall seeing the town name is entering and exiting the town. |

Yes, as one would see entering a town.
Off topic. I'm pretty sure that place has been destroyed since then. If you have an idea of where it was streetwise I can get a pic. I am heading there Memorial Day. Matt |

Jinxy!...good for you!...
I'm not gonna' be able to make it over there until next year... Paul. on another forum states that the building in the photos was demolished by US troops to enable heavy vehivle traffic to negotiate that busy corner more easily...the building was already damaged pretty badly... He actually posted a number of photos and views of the actual building that the BoB team used to replicate the scene for the film... I do have a request for you... I DESPERATELY need some measurements and good detail photos of the concrete poteau/posts/towers that are seen in so many period photos in Normandy...there are some still IN Carentan proper...and i knoe there are a couple still around "Dead Man;s Corner" (museum)...I'm more interested in the measurements from the ground up to about 12-15 feet. Sure would appreciate it! Bruce |
