Here's some intel regarding PTO WW2 Marines.
-Marines didn't wear rank insignia in the field, so you don't need to worry about that. A Marine officer with rank insignia (or even a map or bino case) could expect to attract the attention of Japanese snipers. It wasn't until Korea that it became common practice for Marine NCOs to hand stencil rank chevrons on their HBT uniforms. During WW2 this was uncommon.
-Although there was a USMC shotgun pouch (Battlegear Toys makes one) it was issued in small numbers. Most Marines would have used another pouch or stuck shells in their HBT pockets. DML provides two Army Jungle first aid kits with Barney. He probably used one of those for shotgun shells.
-The USMC "frog skin" camouflage uniform was common during only two campaigns: Bougainville in the Solomon Islands and Tarawa. By the time of the Iwo Jima campaign, the Marines had returned to issuing the sage green HBTs, although the helmet cover remained camouflage for the duration of the war. Looking at historical photos of the battle for Iwo Jima, you can sometimes see Marines wearing frog skin, especially mix and match (sage green trousers and frog skin jacket, for example), but this was not the norm. One point about Iwo-- it was cold. You often see Marines wearing the long sleeve undershirt and the M41 field jacket.
-A bazooka gunner could be carrying a sidearm. However, if you've got poor Barney humping a bazooka and a shotgun, I'd ditch the heavy sidearm. Barney'd thank ya for it!
