The first squad has set out through the middle as per orders. It is advancing in a line called a Reihe, led by the Unterfeldwebel, followed by the
machine gunner, then the riflemen. An Obergefreiter brings up the rear.
The Gefreiter on the motorcycle appears.
With a hand signal, the Unterfeldwebel calls the squad to a halt.
The Gefreiter makes his report:
"Achtung, Herr Unterfeldwebel! There is a group of Amis just a few hundred meters ahead of you! And they are coming this way!"
"Did you see how many there were?"
"I didn't wait around to count them, Herr Unterfeldwebel. The Amis are good shots! But it looked to be about a squad."
"Good work. Now go back and warn the Oberleutnant!"
"Jawohl!"
The rider speeds past the squad, intent on completing his mission.
