This figure has a tie-in to the Ju188 crew that I posted a few weeks ago as he was a member of KG26 and friend of Herr Rohmer's that transfered out to
retrain in the Ar234. I had a chance to speak with him by telephone on several occasions in the late 1980's. I have him wearing the rare Fliegerstahlhelm
44, or 'Type II', which were issued in very limited numbers starting in late '44. Geared more towards the new high performance jet aircraft, it
only caught on with a small percentage of pilots, Häfner being one of them. I have been able to personally examine two examples of this headgear in person over
the years and have seen numerous photos of others. I believe my 1/6th version is very accurate down to the lining.
Below are some photos of a documented genuine Fliegerstahlhelm 44 (no, not from my collection, if it was, I'd sell it and pay off my mortgage
) The only change I made was to the padding above the earphone cut-out
to allow for a better scale fit.
