(1)Did any troops in the 82nd apply the black 'pathfinder' camo face paint or indian war paint like certain units did in the 101st? (2)...also how accurate is DID's 82nd airborne figure "corbin black" indian inspired warpaint sculpt...did 82nd paras applied such facial paint? any info you have concerning specific units in the 82nd and facial war/camo paint i'd greatly appriciate bros.... as i'm awaiting on the new airborne figures to do various bashes. thank you all Miguel T.-

Posts: 111 (06/09/09 04:50:39) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The Indian warpaint seems to have been worn only by "The Filthy 13" - members of the 101st Airborne demolition section. They were extensively photographed prepping for the drop. The clarity of the photos and the unique warlike appearance makes the images memorable and frequently published; however the warpaint was rare. Photographs taken right before the jump showing many 82nd pathfinders wearing dark camo paint on their faces. In a few sticks, every trooper seems to be camoed. In other sticks only two or three sport camo.

Some of the veteran interviews have indicated that it was red, but others say it was black paint from the invasion stripes painted onto the D-Day planes or possibly shoe polish. It does make one wonder where a paratrooper waiting in an assembly area or on a runway would acquire red paint, so I would say the black is more likely, but that's just me trying to use common sense (risky for me!) - I have no idea for sure. I would echo that it was only men from the 101st, and very very few of them at that. Jokes don't go over well on the internet. Once on a forum for the Medal of Honor video game, I said the sequel should take place in the Boer War instead of WWII. No one got the joke; they thought I was serious. Found some pics... all of these are 82nd Pathfinder sticks... the differences between camo between the sticks and even within the same stick are noteworthy... After reading your notes, I realize I'm not sure whether you're asking about face paint within the 82nd as a whole, or just within Pathfinder sticks... and here are a couple of stills taken from a film showing members of an Engineer group (with warpaint) boarding their C-47...( I always thought this film was of the 'Filthy 13'...maybe someone else here can collaborate or dispute this) one can clearly see the white(?) warpaint stripe on this guys's face... Here is how my "Corbin Black" ended 'up'...because of the warpaint thing...I finally decaled his helmet with the Engineer 'E' using a craft punch and white decal paper... Bruce

It should also be noted, the use of war paint was stopped after D-Day due to German propaganda. Interesting note in the C-47 crew pic, the man sitting front row, wearing a sheepskin flying jacket and leggings. Your figure looks great, maybe add some red to the paint. I think black n white were so prevelent since it was readily available from the invasion stripes that were added. The black was sometimes grease. Therefore the Corbin Black sculpt is not accurate, for what the box art shows him to be. As mentioned that was solely the "Filthy Thirteen", who were members of 506th Regimental HQ Demolitions (exceptions soon to follow...). I have had the true honor of meeting several original members of the F13, including Jake McNiece, and have spent several days with Jack Agnew on multiple occassions. He is truly a great guy, with INCREDIBLE stories to share. One of prized possessions is a name tag from a Toccoa reunion, where myself and a friend attended with Jack. I registered late and was going to miss the evening event until Jack wrote "Jr." on his name tag and gave it to me to wear to get me in... But I digress. Jack told me that the face paint came from the invasion stripes on the C-47's, and it was not a planned thing, nor was the haircuts intended to be 'Mohican' mohawks. Jake M. started doing it to make care in the field easier, as he feared possibly not showering for some time and wanted to combat any lice problems... Jack A. said that paint was so thick that when he came back to England at the end of the Normandy campaign, he still had some of it left on his face... Bruce, to answer the exception above and the photos of the 326th guys wearing the face paint... There were a few members of the 326th AEB that jumped with the F13 guys. I believe from C Co. as they had a similar objective. So they were obviously at the Marshaling areas and received the face paint as well. -JOSH

I knew that particular group of 326 Engineers attatched to the HQ group had the same D-Day mission....the two bridges...I guess it would follow that they and the 'Filthy 13' would be grouped 'somewhat' together....bashing my guy as one of the special 326th engineers was the only way I could rationalize using the "Corbin Black" Headsculpt as is...(I do have a BGT demolitions bag, and I'm thinking about sdding that to this guy as well... I think, like Miguel, it would be a shame just to repaint the sculpt. Does anyone have any pics of 82nd troopers wearing blackened faces?...other than the Pathfinders, who seemed to also have painted camo M42's as well? Bruce

Ther was a post not too long ago of a Normandy Troop Carrier pilot bash with leggings and leather jacket...nice bash...and many folks on this and especially another board criticized that he had leggings and a pistol belt with holster...' Actually...many troop command officers and crews DID wear leggings during these combat drop missions...combat resupply missions as well.... but still...anyone with evidence of black face painting on regular Normandy 82nd troopers? I have checked some of my reference when I got home and have found some pics of 82nd guys preparing to board for the flight over for D-Day. Some DO have blackened faces, keep in mind that the black was most likely NOT a camo paint... Most of the guys had little to no 'camo' on their faces, but I do have a pic with a guy whos face is completely blacked out. But again, these guys were nowhere near the heavier application of 'camo' that we see with the 101st guys. I'll try to scan some pics for ya. -JOSH

Soldiers on all sides of the conflict, not just US Airborne troopers, blackened their faces prior to night operations. But rather than using black camo paint, the use of ashes or burnt cork was much more common. It provides a softer blackening/greying of the face, which is more commonly seen in period photos, rather than the hard black covering that face paint would produce. The goal is merely to prevent glare from moonlight and other ambient light reflecting off of the broad, shiny parts of the face, like the forehead, cheeks, and nose. I'm pretty sure Miguel understands that aspect of it...I think he's trying to ascertain whether anyone in the 82nd applied the serious blackened effect like you find on some of the 101st troopers...like the Pathfinders in stick #1...the 'Lillyman' stick...some of the guys did the whole 'Al Jolson' thing... Some of the British paratroopers actually had some sort of face cream they used for D-Day...others used burnt cork or aircraft exhaust soot.. josh...if you have a pic, I'd love to see it, seems like I had one on the computer, but I can't find it... These pics are of guys from the 508th PIR. You can see a wide range from no 'camo' to full face 'camo'. -JOSH Here's also a pic of me with Jack Agnew (left) and Jake Ncniece (right). Jack had his eyes on some young girls. He's always looking for hugs from the ladies... I have a picture of his conquest of that as well... -JOSH

FREAKING AWESOME!.... thanks for the pics...I think the evidence of those pics pretty much clears that up and shows that al least SOME 82nd Troopers went full out on the black face 'paint', 'soot' 'charcoal', 'cork'...whatever!~ Miguel...there you go! Bruce PS...on a similar note...check out my post on the D-Day anniversary in New Orleans this year, specifically the pics of the C-47 096 (chalk 17 for D-Day)...an amazing history of this particular airframe...dropped 508 Pathfinders on D-Day I realized this stick has one guy who went heavy on the black...! Posts: 126 (06/14/09 19:54:05) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	A little late here, but if you look in the book "The Longest Day" there is a picture of 505th pathfinders, the only one known, taken by a friend of the late Pvt. Robert Murphey. He was the trooper who actually landed in the garden in the movie and was most likely one of the first people to invade France. I knew him until he died last October and he used burnt cork. I know in the picture of Ike talking to the 101st the troopers were wearing a mixture of oil and cocoa! One trooper was licking his lips and Ike asked if he liked it and he said "Tastes good Sir!" All kinds of things were used....my grandfather used burnt cork on D-day, a little trick he got from the 101st troopers he used to go into town with on a train, as well as the large pockets they sewed to there HBT's on the legs. As Lt. Bob Edlin said "one night the 101 troopers weren't on the train and we knew the invasion was coming"! "If you want it done, call the 101"-"If you want it done today, Rangers Lead The Way"
