82nd Airborne 1944 "prejump" |
Lead | |
|
I have been wanting to do a 82nd captain for awhile now and I think the release oof the new SS and DiD medics got me inspired too finish this figure. There are
a number of things that are a little wrong such as the mussette bag hung the wrong way and I am not 100% sure of the garrison cap? I just liked the way the
mussette hung this way. I also did minimal weathereing as this 82nd captain has not seen action just yet. I think sometimes "weathering" can go a
little to far and I did not want too do it with this one. He is sporting a NLM M42 and also NLM boots (my favorite) . He has a DiD helmet, and a BBi para rig.
BBi sure did soome nice stuff back in the day. Everything else is pretty much DiD. As always, I hope the airborne experts out there like Josh 51st and Drew
Cook to name just a few let me know what else might be wrong? The helmet netting is also the wrong scale, but I like the looks of it, also BBi. Thanks for
lookin guys!

Great bash, Jay!....
and...you're not 'wrong' in having his musette bag hang this way...For every photo of pre-jump troopers that one can show me, having the musette bag turned the 'other way' (Sicily, Normandy, Southern France, Holland, Germany) I can show you one with the bag facing 'out' like this bash of yours... I 'love' it when re-enactors become the 'experts' on the way it was done, because of their research...they tend to 'adopt' the 'accepted' way...and completely forget individual approach...of course, having a 65 year 'hindsight' sure does allow one time to 'get it right'... The fact is...Airborne tactics, strategies, and practices were in their infancy during the course of WWII....safe and 'better' techniques were constantly being 'trial and errored'...and since none of the US combat jumps were remotely similar to each other, what would have been best practice for one wasn't necessarily good practice for the next one...some troopers thought it would be more efficient to orient their musette bags facing 'backwards' for the jump....later , being able to simply flip the bag over the head and shoulders to have it resting on their back in it's 'carried' configuration....of course, the trooper wasn't easily able to access the bag this way....not, at least, until assembled and grouped....troopers wore them 'pre-jump' according to their 'tastes'...just like the tie-on first-aid kit....(by the Market Garden and Varsity jumps it was fairly common to see them tied onto the helmet netting like this one) Love your Paratroopers! (don't let anyone call them 'Paras'-that was the nickname for the British Paratroopers...and still IS!...-they're PARACHUTE INFANTYMEN!) AND yet ANOTHER GREAT FIGURE from Budro65! Bruce |

Jay,
Sorry it has taken me so long to respond on your bash. Real life has gotten in the way of my hobby time lately. First of all, thanks for calling me an "expert"... I appreciate the nod, but I'm far from it... Second and on to the awesome figure. You've really captured the look of an 82nd pre-jump officer. As they've (most likely) seen combat already, they've learned lessons and didn't quite 'overpack' on the gear the way the 101st did. Great figure, great sculpt choice and I am a huge admirer of your weathering techniques. As others have said, it is perfectly fine and acceptable on the musette facing out. It was done and there are numerous photos of that, as I think Bruce has pointed out on other forums. You could try to stuff it more to better capture the look of the gear/equipment/personal items they shoved in there. My comments (just minor and in NO way meant in detracting from an awesome figure) would be to remove the first aid pack from the helmet, not really done during Normandy. More commonly seen for Market Garden and Varsity. It was actually sctrictly forbidden in a written order in a regiment (if my memory is correct, but may have been a battalion) within the 101st for example. Others have talked about his chute already being hooked without the reserve threaded through the bellyband and the mae west not on yet. Keep in mind, these guys didn't walk out with their chutes on, for the most part their chutes were waiting for them at the Marshalling areas, where they suited up before emplaning. I'd also lose the side cap, as DiD's version is pretty poor and has the wrong braid color for officers. Besides, he looks much 'cooler' with the helmet on... Lastly, I'd move the 82nd patch up slightly. It may be the angle, but it seems a little low on the shoulder. Overall another great figure in your collection that I'm jealous of. Great work. I'd love to see a pic all your paratroopers side-by-side. That would be impressive. -JOSH |

Good bash here, but, I'm no expert by any means. However having a father that was in the AB (PTO- 11th) helps me a bit.
Until this w/e I had Willaim Ward set up to do this same way but I found something to make the change from pre-jump to "just landed" So I'm setting that up for the 65th Anniversary. My only suggestions are, since he is pre-jump, open the chute up. My Dad told me that once it was fastened and secured you kinda looked like a gorilla all hunched over because it was so snug. They did carry them on their backs to the flight line though, just not all secured. The musette is fine as it would be in front, usually under the chute closure. It would be backwards for easy flip over once out on the ground. THe way you have it is nice though becuase it has easy access for stuff, smokes or some food while ya wait. The only other thing I can note would be the life vest, that too would go under the chute closure. If the chute is left open, carrying the vest he'd be a dead ringer for a pre jump IMO. And your helmet netting is ok too. Though a spcial type was issued for D-Day, the one you have is perfect and is quite authentic. That larger netting was used in Sicily, Italy and England duing training. Perhaps the PTO but Dad never saw them or used one. Don't blaim him a bit, you can get your head yanked real well if you snag a tree branch. In all, a fine bash just hope you didn't mind my .02

The garrison cap for an officer is gold braid, perhaps yours is?
It appears white on my monitor.
