The bad news is I have prostate cancer, the good news is I know about it.
Going in for surgery on March 27th at high-noon EST. Got an 85% chance that I'll be cured - pretty good odds. The surgeon used the words "slam dunk" (gotta love March madness and college basketball).
No pain, no symptoms. I'd have never known if not for requesting a PSA blood test during a recent physical. Turns out I have early stage 2 cancer (intermediate, moderately aggressive) at the age of 44 - young for prostate cancer. Average age of diagnosis is 68, one out of six men in the US will get it during their lifetime.
My surgery will be done with something called the da Vinci robot, which looks a little like a cross between the Sony Playstation and something off of the Jawa sandcrawler only cleaner. Should give me a much faster recovery time compared to the traditional method. End result is the same.
Between my family, friends, this hobby and my guitar, I'm a lucky man - there are no shortages of relaxing distractions in my life (ok, the family is not always relaxing, but they are very supportive).
I was happy to see "model building" in a list of suggested therapies for stress relief - made sure to let my wife know that too. I'm counting action figures as model building.
Anyhoo, I may not say much for awhile, but I'll be checking in as much as I can. I'm counting on seeing some cool bashes to help speed my recovery.
