Help with Gordon Highlanders uniform |
Lead | |
|
I am planning on doing a Gordon Highlanders Sergeant of the 51st Highland Div. durning Fall 1944. What reference book is best to find proper insignia
placement. I know very little of British division/regiment uniforms. And looking to expand my collection to the British. And a uniform reference starting
point. Thanks for any guidance.
Good kill......

The Osprey Volume no.187 , " British Battle Insignia 2 , 1939-45 " by Mike Chappell is the first port of call. It's in print ,and quite
cheap. That should explain the system of British badges.
Otherwise Bouchery , " The British Soldier from D-Day to VE-Day ", H&C , large format hardback , will be very useful. The Gordons, like other Highland Regiments ,officially wore on their upper sleeves , from the top: Patch of Gordon tartan.( this in place of the shoulder titles worn by other units ) The Div. patch " HD " Scarlet Infantry Arm of Service strip: how many of those depended on the which battalion and it's position of seniority in the Brigade. There were occasional variations on this , mostly in the relative positions of the tartan and the Div badge. This seems to have varied betweenHighland battalions , and ideally it would be best to find a pic of the battalion you want to do: 1st or 5/7th Gordons. The only pic I have of a Gordon shows an officer , with a narrow curved piece of tartan like the shape of the conventional shoulder titles, with a yellow stripe along the centre. This is right at the top of the sleeve , worn over the HD sign. I anyone has any better pics it would be nice to see them. |

I have kitbashed a couple of Gordon Higlanders myself. I'm particularly fond of this regiment since I'm from the NE of Scotland (home area of the
regiment) and my great uncle served with them in WW2. I remember seeing some re-enactment pics upon which i based my Gordon Highlander figures from both 51st
and 15th Divisions. While re-enactment pics are not 100% accurate, it gave me a good idea for insignia placement. Here are the addresses of a couple of useful
sites:
www.gordonhighlanders.com/ www.cameronians.com/15th/index.htm Maybe you have come across them before, but if you haven't you may find tham useful.

Thank you to Tony Barton and Major Archie Gates! You've both given me a ton of info to work with on my Gordon Highlander. Will post photos when completed.
Thanks again.
