I did some more reading this morning and the author stated that the amoeba pattern was issued in a one piece coverall to engineers, paratroopers, recon units, snipers, some mountain troops, and border patrol. I know that some of the other one piece coveralls in other patterns were issued to motorized recon groups and have seen period photos of soldiers operating out of a US M3 and a Tank where one piece coveralls.

Looking closely over the photo you provided I would tend to agree with Dan (although it is very hard to see due to shadows and obvious belts/harnesses obstructing the midsection) that they appear to be two piece uniforms.

To also add to Dan's rule of thumb for Russian camo, I don't believe I have ever seen mittens attached to a one piece. Although not all two pieces had the mittens either. So I would tend to believe that the noting of attached mittens would tend to rule out the item being a one piece. I know that as I type this someone is going to prove me wrong. But thats what I have noted.

A little logic I think is reasonable for areas where details are hard to find That book I have is really poorly written. The author makes no attempt to be any where near exhaustive. He intentionally excludes any uniform that does not involve dying of fabric and/or printed patterns. So excludes all winter and the elusive two piece green suit with the fake foliage attached. He also makes vauge statements like I did above that the suits both in two piece and one pice where issued to all these groups but without any clarifiers.

I would say that the coveralls could have possibly been a priority for motorized recon, boarder guards, and paratroopers. I believe that in spite of the books flaws, the author has done his research. He mentions throughout the very brief WWII section that the boarder guards were often issued the patterns in coveralls (one piece). I have made a bit of an assumption (danger, danger!!!!) based on reading some first person accounts. I would imagine that tankers and airborne would find a 1 piece version of a loose fitting garment more useful due to the nature of their tasks. The tankers mentioned the helpfulness of their coveralls due to the amount of dirt they handle one a regular basis to the helpfulness of getting in and out of their vehicles without getting snagged. This one author even mentioned removing his belt for that reason as well as for using to keep the turret hatch latch from locking due to the difficulty of managing that latch under normal conditions and under stress or injury it could be impossible. I add paratroopers because I imagine the top part of a two piece flopping all over potentially. But I also think that first picture you posted is an example of the two piece being used (potentially).

I think you have discovered enough evidence to use either or. I do find it curious that the one piece you have found looks as though it was made from a two piece. There seems to be a seem around the waste or are my eyes deceiving me?

I wish berku76(Sergey) was still around and active. He seem to have a lot of knowledge about Russian troops and I also believe he is Russian and had some of the Russian volumes. He was always correcting my poor assumption, although Dan and Frasmet have done a fair job themselves of keeping me honest. Fun thread, and its been frustrating and enjoyable helping you in your research.
