Steiners rank is one of several goofs in the film.Indeed! Cross Of Iron is a classic anti-war movie and 'Steiner' a great character. However, for me there has always been the dilema of making this figure's uniform and decorations true to the movie version and consequently being innacurate compared to real events (ie Gold Combat Clasp in 1943, NCO trim when he is described at the start of the movie as a corporal!) or vice versa. I've pretty much kept my original Steiner the way he came out of the box. |

Major Archie, please keep in mind that ' Steiner ' was an a-political soldiers-soldier, the way I read the book and later on watched the movie I always
thought he ha'd been in ww1 before and now his only aliegence rested with his men and not with his insignia, so that
renders the whole ' corectnes off the uniform ' insignificant. Just my 2 cents. Infact I remember ( from the movie ) That one off his men whas waring a Soviet fur-cap with red star and all. STEINER RULES SUPREME ! |

The whole timeline/insignia quetion is a different matter. ( Hollywood artistic liscence ) but you catch my drift I hope. S.R.S !

Ever notice how war movies that were once "awesome" to us in the past are now no longer up to snuff, as far as accuracy of uniforms, weapons and
vehicles go?
This hobby has taught us much about those things, and now that's what we look for, instead of just enjoying the escapism factor that the movie was originally intended to provide. At least, that's what I catch myself doing when I watch those old classic war movies. |

Freekshowbilly wrote: In the book, Steiner is his late 20's, just like the real-life guy he might be modelled on, RK-träger Johann Schwerdfeger. At 48, Coburn was a bit too old for the part, but his interpretation was just right. As for Krüger, his uniform and gear is a 50/50 German/Soviet mix; in the book, it is hinted that his father was a Russian.
War is best enjoyed in 1/6th
scale.

you know what, I have to agree with you on that, OSP. No one really seems to just enjoy the movies (or the figures) anymore. I, fo rone, don't mind a
little inaccuracy, as long as it's not too far out there. Just my opinion.

Yea, since this thread has run it's course, I will add: I'm OK with a little error in an older movie, but not newer ones. How about when Hollywood
used to use US tanks for German tanks? I.E. Battle of the Bulge? At least they had a similar Patton tank as the proto-type in the Bunker, consistency has a
bit of a plus!

Wasn't Stiener busted down to corperal before the time period in the movie? As a non-conformist he wouldn't have removed his rank/

The MDFC conducted a poll regarding the update of past favorite figures and Steiner was the winner. In other words--"We're running out of ideas!"
"Preblown. It's like Preheat. Set it up to blow up. I'm already preblown because I'm already hooked up. Don't make no sense,
don't it? Of course it don't. Dimebonics."

....in actual fact, I believe he said "perhaps we should consider the possibility that the figure may be based on
Heinrich's supposed real-life inspiration for the character Steiner, Feldwebel Johann Schwerdfeger". Then he posted this real-life picture of
Schwerdfeger:
As well, regarding Steiner's age - in Willi Heinrich's book, Das Geduldige Fleisch or "The Willing Flesh" (later changed to "Cross of Iron" to coincide with the movie title), Sergeant Steiner is said to be roughly twenty-two years of age. Don't look like no old Hollywood actor to me. |

Your right OSP he does not look anything like the late great James Coburn.........and going by that B&W photo the new headsculpt looks nothing like a
twenty-something year old either ...perhaps they decided to mix the two together,i think those of us that already have the Steiner figure will probably be very
happy to keep the original.

Well the real character also has an "inaccurate" uniform - look the tank-destruction bagdes are on the "wrong" arm!!
Those damned germans - why do the keep doing stuff we havn't read about in the books!! Henrik |

That's a great photo, simply for the fact that the Tank Destruction Badges are worn on the left sleeve. Normally, they were worn on the right! I always
enjoy coming across WWII photos with unique, odd or rare equipment, uniform or insignia items/usage. It makes those questions we all sometimes have of
"Would a so-and-so ever wear such-and-such equipment?" difficult to answer, because while there are norms, there are also usually exceptions to those
norms - anything goes!

Don't know how new it is, but there seems to be a montage of the exclusives on Dragon's homepage. Steiner is in the corner, with Elsa, wearing a
splinter winter jacket. Not a great big image itself (of Steiner & Elsa), but it's better than a freakin' shadow.
*Still* Looking for the MDFC Blurred Edge Winter/Sniper Mask!

Thanks for the intel on 'Elsa', David.
New head sculpt with blonde, plastic hair. The body doesn't seem quite so buxom as their most recent offerings in the picture provided. A new body type, perhaps? I think it unlikely but a new body type is always appreciated. The hands seem to be the ones that came with 'Kate Ericson', very much like Kung-Fu Grip hands, which would be cool.
If anyone wants to split this package, let me know and we'll work something out as I'd really like to add the new 'Elsa' to my collection.
