I'm converting nearly all of my SS over to Heer. Maybe they're just getting old after all these years, but I'm tired of the bloody SS. I'm
keeping my best eight SS men who are all wearing spring alfred smocks with matching covers, but that's it. I used to have about 25 Waffen SS troopers.
Peadot? Palm? Italian Camo? All gone. There's absolutely nothing political here, but I'm just tired of looking at them. I don't know what came over
me earlier this year. Thanks to the marsh smock of Axel Haas, the complete properly-colored 2nd pattern HBT wrap of Johan Sigel, and the splinter helmet covers
of ToyCity, I can now create a fully camo'd Army section suitable for Normandy fighting, similar to von Luck's 21st PD forces. But mine ar either 2nd
PD or PanzerLehr. Many of my SS are now American grunts too. But my beloved Fallies will forever remain unchanged, however. Are you transfering any of your old
fellows into any new divisions, nationalities, or theatres ?

I guess i am also. not so much converting all of them, but I seem to be making them smaller and more specialized. the only ones that are still big are my U.S.
92nd ID and my Italian divisions. I haven't really worked on either of them in a while, I've been venturing in to other eras and Army.

I'm finding that I'm bashing mostly 'groups' of figures...maybe not actual squad size, but in 'more-than-single' arrangements...except
for the 'character study' types...like a pre-jump paratrooper, or an 8th AF MP gate guard...etc. IMO, the groups 'pose' better for display
purposes (they allow the motion 'dynamic' to be implied)
As far as 'Germans'...I bash the Germans only as an example of the types of troops that faced the Allies in northern Europe From D-Day on... No preference one way or another as far as type or service...for example...next to the display of my 9th ID 'drive to St. Lo' bazooka team, is the display of my Panzer Lehr SPW team in assault wraps...displayed next to my Regina Rifles bashes is my Norrey-en-Bessin 12thSS 'group'... I group them as they appeared opposite each other historically...I'm currently building a group of 30th ID riflemen to display opposite the FJ 3rd Div hedgerow panzershreck team... as a consequence, I end up having quite a few German groups even though my emphasis is on the allies... I'm still building up my IJA forces, with 21st Century, BBi and soon DiD/3R Japanese figures
I might convert them to VietCong in the future, but right
now I'm really into WWII Japan not surprisingly by my name haha.

I've left the squad-building, and concentrate on single figures instead, putting a bit more effort in them. Haven't tired of W-SS, though...
War is best enjoyed in 1/6th
scale.

I've long ago left the idea of squad building.
No Italians with long rifles, greatcoats, bustinas. No GIs with M-1 Garands, non-airborne uniforms, musette bags.

When I started I was getting every thing that hit the street. After I got Heer, 29th ID, and 1st ID squads built I decided to go more for small dioramas with
1-2 figures.
While I have about 3 dozen SS figs I no longer collect or display them, just lost interest. I have 3 U.S., 6 Brits, and 7 German paras and never have really been as interested in them as a lot of people seem to be. My main interest lies on the air force side and I'm trying to get as many pilots and crewmen as come out (come on DID). I have a number of tankers, but all my tanks are full so really all I'm doing now is airmen.

Squad building has been my favorite part of this hobby. They are always being worked on, upgrading details and so fourth. I have four squads, US 4th Infantry
durning Normandy to the Cobra breakout, Heer covers 1943 thru the end of the war, 3rd SS Kursk period (finally got enough Toys City M40 spring plane tree
smocks to outfit 80% of my troopers) and last a Russian squad to fit mainly a counterpoint to the 3rd SS troopers. The 4th ID are based on DML Scott's
uniforms and equipment. The 4th ID squad are my favorites and have the most combat gear, weapons and support soldiers. I know the RTV stuff may look better to
some, and is better, but I like the look and character of my "veterans" in plastic.
Next the Heer soldats, they have many support weapons and
equipment. I've built them up to cover mid to late war look. Some veterans and new younger soldats. Also have support troops and verious Officers,
(Artillery, Communcations, and medical) to suit my needs in different photo shoots. The SS soldats have gone thru the most changes. First as 1945 period in
Hungry. Then to 1943 Kursk, which led up to my biggest historical blunder. I used spring M40 poly dot smocks for the Kursk , It was rather bluntly pointed
out that poly dot wasn't in use in by the 3rd SS in 1943. Which after spending alot of time researching the Kursk battle, I found M40 plane tree was common
in 1943. So I boxed up the SS figures when no M40 plane tree smocks were avilable. unitl Toys City released their version which are really outstanding peices.
Hard to find, but worth it. Have 10 plane tree smocks now, with 4 palm pattern added for diversity. And have been my current project as of late. It was a hard,
expensive lesson to learn about correctly researching a project, before posting figures on a specific period. So, if anyone would like to buy 14 spring polydot
smocks I have some, lol. The Soviets were the easiest to do, with all that is avilable. Officers, NVKD, snipers suits, support troops and weapons. Have 18
currently done up. With more of the newer items being released ie: leather slings, mapcases, boots, I have upgraded on some things, but other things I find I
like some of the plastic 1st issued items more and easier to detail and weather. And cost is a factor also. For me it boils down to what I think looks best.

I don't really convert them I just keep adding lol. I started with a random mix of allies/germans then added about 25 FJ, then switched my focus to field
division troops, then slipped into the flak crew, that really caused me some headache as my flak crew was already built when the flakvierling showed up, with
my issues with the sights i had to change out my gunner for the shorter Timo Ducca, although that SOUNDS minor keep in mind 99.9% of my figures are for photo
stories, to maintain some type of continuity I have all my story figures stored in a database with name, rank, and pic. so I still have to repair that. One
good thing though, at this point I pretty much have all the past releases I want, so for example with the new FJ Eugen, I just need to get 2 convert one to
LWFD add them to the database and write them into my next story. The biggest conversion i'm doing is turning a 3rd floor bedroom into a French village,
just a few more buildings to go and I can get the new story rolling

Still building Heer figure squads. Never had, or cared much for, SS figures. Must be the Russin blood in me!
Also a U.S. squad, but now trying to find some "old pattern" M41's, pants, medic helmet, to swap for the "new" medic stuff from Doc Baker. Old stuff is harder to find than you would think. I want to match the medic with the rest of the squad, and I am not interested in spending a ton to upgrade the other 20 plus guys to "new" standards. |

Right now I'm into panzer pioneers - wich came about when I coundn't justifiing doing another panzerguy - or another panzer recon guy - or another
SS-panzer guy....
I also think I have as many grenadiers as I can possible want - both heer and SS. I'm actually wondering if the 2 german medics and the hilfskrankenträger (and the nurse) - should be accompanied by a doctor - or if I should do some signals troops? But the squad building goes on... Henrik |

Well I collected mostly Waffen-SS, been buliding squads for the Hungarian theater ( 1944-1945 ),most are finished but I am FAR to much of a perfectionist....so
I end up changing them again and again.
Am also rather into Fally's and Luftwaffe, but as usual time is my enemy. My main passion is collecting 1:1 German militaria, so this takes priority and it seems that what is coming out in 1/6th is not up to my standard anymore....shame but true ) - : Nick.

I have stopped adding to my Normandy SS platoon. I had to sell some last year when I was diagnosed with Lymphoma. I had roughly 40 and am now down to 25.
I have a full squad of 12 Normandy/ France campaign Heer soldiers I am currently trying to finish my two full squads of 101st and 82nd Normandy Pathfinders. I have 10 of each Airborne Division. I might end up with 12 each. I am also working on a squad of of 2nd Rangers, that inlcudes my bash of Reiben form SPR. I was thinking of trying to do a photo story that would be called Reiben's new unit. Where after the bridge at Ramelle, he is put in with a group of group of Ranger survivors that were defending the flank of Ramelle against other units of the SS division that were trying to make and end run and come up from behind a couple of miles away. I had taken Johannes, Craig, Hakon, Jeb and made them Rangers with plans on a few more that will include Reiben and maybe four to six more figures. I changed Johannes and Hakon bodies to the football player ones that look a little larger. I made Johannes a Captain and Hakon a BAR gunner (Though I might have to change, since I have Reiben and Jeb already as BAR Gunners and three in one squad might be a bit much. I am also making a four to six man squad of Normand Falschirmjagers After seeing the two latest DiD releases of the British Paratrooper and the Japanese soldier, I may have to do some Red Devils, some Japanese and some Marines (to beat the Japs of course) Buit, that may come next year or later. |

A couple of years ago I broke down my SS squad circa summer, 1943. I still have my SS squad from the last winter of the war in fall oak leaf and fall blurred
edge cold weather suits.
I'm still taking a bit of a sabbatical from the hobby. I have a seven month old grandson and I've found myself buying more baby toys and clothes than camo smocks lately. I've also been hitting amazon more frequently for books. My other figures represent themes such as Normandy, Italy, North Africa, Budapest and Arnhem but not more than 2-3 figures per theme. I also have a few stand-alone figures like my Prinz Eugen gebirgsjager and Monte Cassino fallschirmjager. I could see myself adding a few more Russians to the mix as well as some figures along the lines of a French Resistance fighter or one of Tito's partisans. |
