5th Guards Army- Kursk, 1943
This figure is what I considered a "character sketch" of an Uzbek in the Red Army. I have been interested with the non-Slavic people that served in the Red Army in WWII. We have seen Asians portrayed, I wanted to show a man from Uzbekistan, caught up in the events of his day and soldiering far from the borders of his home.
Military parade in Tashkent, Uzbekistan circa 1940-1941 prior to hostilities
Uzbekistan contributed 1.2 to 1.4 million men (figures dependent on your sources) to serve in the Red Army. Uzbekistan comes in fourth after Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine in supplying men during the "Great Patriotic War".
My figure, Guards Soldier "Usman Mahmudov", is portrayed here in the 5th Guards Army, Kursk, eastern Russia in early July, 1943.
He is equipped as seen in this photo here of elements of the 5th Guards Army marching to Kursk- probably photographed months earlier, prior to the battle.
This was a fun figure to work with and pose- I know there are a lot of artists who prefer their figures static, I still like to be able to change poses as the mood strikes me.
Usman's boots are from Newline Miniatures, re-soled with a more realistic rubber sole.
His gear is very simple, his entrenching tool cover, belt and spare ammo case are scratch made. Thank you to Tony Barton for the cast buckle.
His head sculpt is Tony Barton's #4- he has been with me for a while and I have finally found his niche- as an Uzbek Red Army soldier! Painted with a darker palette and given a "real" mustache in the way of fine woolen fibers.
His Rifle is DML, re-worked and re-painted with a scratch made sling assembly. The hands are from DAM, painted with a darker wash to match his complexion. The helmet is made by Troitskaya28, painted and weathered by me, the internal padding and chin strap are scratch made.

Sorry for the addition- I just wanted to show he does have full range of motion- I didn't re-position his legs much between poses.
Thank you for looking..........Jim
